In 1961 Shepherds Fire Department was created.
One of the main reasons Shepherds came about was due to a man named Thomas Edward Karriker and the Shepherds Lion's Club. Both parties were very persistent in making clear that the Shepherds Township needed fire protection for the community. And after numerous meetings with the County board Shepherds was created. Mr. Karriker would soon become a major force within the department as he held various positions such as: a Founding member, Secretary, Treasurer and Fire Chief for approximately 15 years. After his term ended Shepherds would have other men carry the position of Chief (David Wilson & Don McClain).
But when Steve "Bosco" Alexander took the helm he would change the entire way Shepherds would move foward with progression and change. During the Bosco era he noticed that training and education of the fire service would be very important for curent and future members of the department. Bosco went out and traveled all over the county obtaining certfications in different topics of the fire service so he could pass them along. Bosco was most known for his distinctive voice and tactics when communicating radio traffic to various departments, fire control (known as ECOM now) & personnel. Sadly Bosco would pass away and Chief Kelly Robinson was next up and had some big shoes to fill.
In 2006/2007 Shepherds established their own tax district. Chief Robinson and various other members went out door to door asking the community tax payers for their vote. By doing this certain areas of the fire district went from a 9s rating to a 9 allowing them to see a decrease in their fire tax as well as bumping Shepherds to a 6 mile tax district. The biggest controversy Shepherds faced was the construction of our current firehouse located on Charlotte Hwy. Some thought that it was way too big for our needs.
But Don McClain & Chief Robinson had a plan in mind. In 2007 there were talks about possibly putting a Mooresville station just blocks down from Shepherds. Chief Robinson didn't see a need of having another station constructed so close to an existing fire station so he came up with an idea of making the whole 2nd story of Shepherds a place for Mooresville Engine # 4.
Following that notion an unprecented contract was formed in Iredell County where both Mooresville Fire station's 2 & 4 (also known as Shepherds Sta 1) would run Automatic aid for any FIRST DUE Shepherds calls. This would allow a fire engine to respond right off the bat once an emergency is receieved to help our community along with our volunteers. Now it wasn't all smooth sailing with this agreement but the current memership realizes that it's not about themselves as a whole but more for what's best for the COMMUNITY we serve.
